Which door to open?

Wind Direction

Back at the W Hotel (formerly the Hotel Washington) again today, eating at the new Jean Georges steakhouse. This is taken from the world-famous roof of that building.

The American flag in the distance is one of many flags on the rooftops of buildings on this square block. Just feet from the White House, rooftop snipers use this array of flags to judge wind direction and speed in the event they have to line up a shot. Now you know.

@ P.O.V.

Charity event at the newest D.C. club: P.O.V. at the W Hotel (formerly the Hotel Washington).

I had a rye, ginger, and soda drink. The crowd was drier than the drink.

Hazy, Hot, and Humid

The swampy summer weather finally set in. Bummer. This picture just *feels* uncomfortably sticky.

Hey, I got some new shoes on.

Stranger Near a Train

I think this one is very Hitchcockian. Last of the series from the trip to NYC.

Adventure on the Potomac

Too dangerous to take the camera out on the river, especially after the Brasserie Beck incident. So here's a dry-land shot of our group preparing to go white water tubing. What a day!

The Train Home

Because I'm feeling generous, here are two pictures from Penn Station. I think they complement each other nicely.

Yes, cropped for effect.

@ Jean Georges

The open kitchen of my favorite NYC restaurant. I went for restaurant week. Total time in the City: 23 hours.

Dinner was peekytoe crab, pink cod, baby artichokes, and homemade graham cracker with bitter chocolate crème. Delicious. The highlight of the evening, though, were the Hendricks and muddled cucumber cocktails—so strong, I barely remember dessert!

The Wire

The best and worst parts of my job: listening to audio recordings of surreptitious body wires.

@ Sushi Taro 2

They even have homemade soy sauce.

Lately I've been torn between two pictures from an event, so I'm going to start, from time to time, posting a second picture the next day. Call it "savoring the moment a little longer."

Americana

Two gentlemen taking in America's favorite pastime.

Watched the Cubs beat the Nats last night. More from the ballpark tomorrow . . .

Yes, cropped for effect. My blog, my rules.

Give Blood

I did. It saves lives.

Self Portrait 3

Not to sound sinister, but this reminds me of a shot from the movie "Assassins". Anyway, I'm just waiting for the doors to open to go to lunch.

Espionné à Le Bar

No, it is really called "Le Bar". I'm not kidding. I love the overexposure here. It's very "milky".

Things I (Heart) 2

I love how the Capitol just comes out of nowhere sometimes.

P.S.: Happy Bastille Day!

The right framing can make anything seem sinister.

Sandwiches, fries, and Cokes, I think.

Gaslight

The excellent George Cukor movie. Also, the light on my walk home tonight.

Things I (Heart)

After six years, the thing I still love most about Washington is that I can look down 16th Street and see the White House and the Washington Monument. Out for a walk with Tova tonight, admiring the view. I hope you do, too.

Tip: click on the picture to see it in a larger size, and you'll be able to make out the landmarks.

Self Portrait 2

And we're back. I thought I'd do another self portrait to christen the new Minox. I swear to you, this image is not blown up. That's just how much grain there is at night in very low light. But I love the effect here. Anyway, it's good to be shooting again.

And a special shout-out to my new friends in Germany. Willkomen und guten abend.

Taking the stairs. Replaced Minox should return tomorrow. Fingers crossed . . .

New Guards

"But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security."

Did They Just Make a Covert Handoff?

Observed at Dupont Circle. 3:01 PM. Only the spy camera knows.

Self Portrait 1

I don't normally take pictures of myself, but I'm making an exception for this blog. Here's the first. This is on my walk home.

The Wet Down

When I used to work grip/electric crews, we'd get the fire department to wet down the pavement at night so the lights would shimmer. If it rains as much as it has the last 30 days, you don't really need a fire hose. Was a cool effect then; is still a cool effect now.
