Irony Can Be Pretty Ironic

Spotted behind my office: only an architecture firm would have a floor divide a window in two. (Window on the right.)

Scenes From a Party

This one has an "ensemble cast" feel to it. Thanks to everyone for coming to celebrate with me!

I admit to cropping this photo for effect. Again: my blog, my rules.

That's a Full Fridge!

Ready for the big BBQ party. What you're looking at: packages of Montgomery Inn ribs, chicken, and sauce, and just the tip of the beer/wine/champagne iceberg. Stay tuned tomorrow for actual party pictures.

Now With Comments . . .

Goods news: you can now leave comments. I reserve the right to moderate. And engage.

Does Anyone Know What The $%#*@ This Is?!?

And why is it in the park by my condo? I'm looking for any leads you may have.

A Trip to the Haberdasher's on Jermyn Street

I couldn't care less about pants. I have half a dozen or so pairs of grey wool pants. That's all I need. But shirts—that's a different story. The Thomas Pink sale today was good to me, and I to it.

My Blog, My Rules

After shooting with the Minox for a number of weeks now, I've accumulated photos I love but haven't posted, either because I picked another photo that day or because I took it before June 8. But my blog, my rules. So from time to time, I'll post a photo from a prior day that for some reason didn't make the initial cut.

I love today's picture. I've never been a portraitist, but every once in a while I'll take a portrait that just really speaks to me. My most famous is a silhouette of my brother playing solitaire. It was a completely-by-accident shot that now hangs on our family portrait wall. In tonight's photo, I think the lighting (which happened utterly by chance) gives my dear compatriot CC a wonderful glow. And yes, she told me I could post this.

Worlds Collide

They're shooting a feature film in my firm's office building. My past and my present have met. I don't know whether to take a deposition or a light meter reading. Ha! I've got plenty more of those—don't tempt me!

P.S.: For those who are curious, that's a cam-lock, 5 wire, 3 phase pass thru distro box. Duh!

Peering

As cartoons and "Get Smart" have taught us, there is no better concealment for a spy than behind the sparse fronds of a palm.

For its intended purpose . . .

So I didn't "develop"* the pictures I took this weekend until tonight. I wanted to post this shot from MS's birthday party Saturday night. I'm going to start to use my spy camera more often for its intended purpose: spying.

Oncoming Traffic

The things we'll do for the perfect angle. This isn't even the worst: I once held a camera while hanging from the under support of an El bridge. Broke my thumb doing that one.

Two bottles of water: $3. Umbrella: $25. Google map: $.05/page. Two Merriweather Post concert tickets: $80. Sitting in two hours of traffic to see the newest country music superstar: priceless.

Would you believe?

I love spy gadgets. And I love photography. Put those together, and you can understand my profound love of the Minox miniature spy camera. I picked up a digital version in April.

I am also turning 30 tomorrow. And I want to be creative again. So here's what I'm doing. Starting on my birthday, every day, I will post one picture taken that day with my Minox. The picture may be something pedestrian. It may be something inspired. It may be something sublime. Regardless, at the end of the year, there will be 365 of them. And they may tell a story. Or it may be chaos.

So a couple of details . . .

1. To: MFW. If you are reading this, and you know who you are, I apologize for co-opting your idea. I give you full credit for the concept, but I thought it was such a great project that I wanted to try it myself. I hope mine can offer a unique experience. And I hope you can forgive me as well as the legal minutiae of copyright law.

2. My DSLR may act as substitute camera from time to time. It shouldn't have to sit on the bench all year while the Minox has all the fun. I'll let you know when it gets its shot.

3. If I miss a post, I will backdate it when I eventually put it up. And the picture will correspond to the date of the post.

Tune in tomorrow, June 8, 2009, for the first post. And everyday thereafter through June 7, 2010.
